An excellent single-leg exercise that targets the gluteal muscles, specifically the gluteus maximus. Core and pelvic stability is key here in order to work the relevant muscles, so as the controlled tempo.
This is how to do it:
Attach an ankle cuff to the low pulley of a cable machine. Set the weight to a manageable level that allows for controlled movement throughout the exercise.
Attach the cuff to one ankle. Depending on the machine, you might want to stand on a low step or a stack of weights to be able to move your working leg freely.
Stand facing the machine, holding onto the machine frame for balance. Shift your weight onto the non-working leg and keep your torso slightly inclined forward, maintaining a neutral spine. Engage your core to keep your upper body stable.
The leg with the cuff should be slightly bent and positioned just in front of the grounded leg. Exhale as you kick the working leg backwards in a controlled motion, fully extending the hip. Focus on contracting your glutes at the peak of the movement. Avoid arching your lower back or swinging the leg; the movement should be smooth and controlled.
Slowly bring the leg back to the starting position, resisting the pull of the cable.
